Higher education graduates' employment and the uncertainty of working life.

2012

The aim of this chapter is to examine how the uncertainty and instability of working life is reflected in Finnish polytechnic graduates’ employment. The present study investigates the fields of business and engineering by comparing two graduate cohorts. The societal context in which new graduates enter working life is that of an increasing precariousness in the labour market, which affects higher education graduates as well as the general population. Nowadays, a higher education qualification is not necessarily a guaranteed path to a high income and high social status as it used to be. Insecurity and uncertainty in society and working life can be considered as general features of late moder…

Rethinking the Role of Volunteering in the Labor Market Inclusion of Migrants

2023

In this article, we critically investigate the role that volunteering can have in the labor market inclusion of migrants. We consider how volunteering can both enhance and hinder inclusion through a comparison of two different contexts: Finland and the United Kingdom, where both welfare state and migration regimes are differently shaped. We also question whether volunteering to gain work experience can be defined as “volunteering” or whether it corresponds more with a definition of unpaid labor. Our research is based on 104 interviews with migrants (including refugees and asylum seekers) from various nationalities. We find that volunteering is used in both countries as a way to gain work e…

Trabajo no remunerado y trabajo negro en España

2005

Surveying Supported Employment in Finland: A Follow-up

2007

The longitudinal status of supported employment in Finland was examined via a 2003 nationwide survey sent to job coaches involved in supporting workers with intellectual and other disabilities. Sustained supported employment, defined as "paid work in integrated settings with ongoing supports that contained at least two on-site visits per month at the worksite" was identified at 22 organizations that supported 52 workers. The results of the current survey were compared with those gained from similar surveys conducted in 1998, 1999, and 2001. Comparison of data over a 6-year period showed a decline in the provision of intensive employment supports and appeared to reflect both a change in Euro…

Introduction. The Global Old-Age Care Industry. Tapping into Care Labor Across and Within National Borders

2021

A few weeks after the first COVID-19 infections were diagnosed in Germany, NGOs and experts in the field of old-age care warned of acute bottlenecks in the provision of care for older Germans. They feared that care workers from Eastern Europe who were travelling back to their home countries might not be able to return to Germany due to the closure of borders. As a result, up to 200,000 migrant care workers could be missing after Easter. The weekly German magazine Der Spiegel quoted one NGO’s spokesperson saying: “We already had a shortage of care workers, the crisis has been here for a long time.” Another NGO’s spokesperson was particularly concerned about older people in need of care who w…

The Division of Labour Within Households: Men’s Increased Participation?

2018

Unequal division of domestic labor has been seen as a one of the most commonly documented feature on gender inequality in the western countries. The relevance of studying the division of labour in the household has actualized as female participation rates in paid labour have increased and changes in employment systems have taken place. Division of labor refers to the amount and share of time men and women spend in paid and unpaid work. Unpaid work includes domestic chores such as cleaning, repairs, preparing meals, but also caring for children. Unpaid work is usually divided in three subgroups: core household tasks i.e. housework, repairs and household upkeep and child care. Paid and unpaid…

ESTIMATION OF AN EXTENDED SAM WITH HOUSEHOLD PRODUCTION FOR SPAIN 1995

2005

This paper implements the conceptual framework sketched by Pyatt (1990) to construct an extended Social Accounting Matrix for Spain in 1995 (ESAM-95) to consider, in addition to the market economy, the production of services provided by households through unpaid work. In doing so, the ESAM-95 integrates the accounts related to market activities (ESA accounts) with non-market activities (non-ESA accounts) in a consistent way. Additional classifications are introduced in both ESA and non-ESA accounts in order to disaggregate the institutional accounts by household type and those of production factors by educational level and gender. The extended SAM is useful to calibrate CGE models in which …

Työhyvinvoinnin paradoksit kolmannen sektorin palkkatyössä

2018

In recent years, the institutional environment of Finland’s third sector has undergone major changes. One consequence of that has been paid work becoming more important in organizing third sector activities. However, empirical evidence detailing how much paid work has actually grown and what that means for employee well-being is rare. Therefore, this dissertation studies how paid work has increased in the Finnish third sector while also examining the situation of Finland’s third sector employee well-being in comparison to public and private sector employees. Moreover, the dissertation analyzes the factors that create and reduce third sector employee well-being. Based on Statistic Finland’s …
